P1 - P1 - Protein therapeutics have increased dramatically in use. Human proteins are in great demandfor the treatment of diseases, but the costs are high and output small.
P2 - Human proteins that have appropriate post-translational modifications can be produced in the milk of transgenic sheep. Research groups are investigating whether transgenic animals can be used to produce theraeuic proteins.
Advantages:
Output can be 40g/liter and costs are relatively low.
it uses less than half the experimental animals than does proneuclear injection.
It is possible to specify the sex of offspring and reduce the time taken to generate a flock.
Disadvantages:
it takes a long time to generate and validate transgenic animals and the transgene may affect the animal.
Nevertheless:
The number of therapeutic proteins developed by the biomedical industry is growing rapidly. Transgenic animals could provide an alternative source of therapeutic proteins to help meet the demands.
