main idea: introduce several potential causes of the scattering distribution pattern of the remians and causes about the mastodon's death
structure:
p1.the fossils not appeared to be impacted by rodent, carnivore or weathering and the the possible cause of the distribution pattern:-portions of the anterior may have seperated from the decomposing carcass and laid in the portion of the former pond;
-redistributed by the activity of mastodons or other animals
-removed by scavangers
-destroyed by equipment excavating the ditch
p2.the hypotheses of the death cause:
- got drown after breaking through a mat of quaking bog?the pond was open pond
-got mired ? two evidences provided to refute the view
-the animal was frequent to the pond so the likelihood of potential circumstance was low
-by calculating, the author concluded that its hind leg would have been mired in ca. 47cm or less than half way up its lower leg
the distance between the dorsal articular surface of astragalus and the the top of the sand layer was ca. 61cm
+
the bottom of loot extended ca.24cm below the top of astrgalus
= the bottom of the foot would have been ca. 85cm
-
sediment-water interface below the sand layer at that time ca. 38cm
= hind leg would have been mired in ca.47cm of the pond mud
< 50% * total hind leg length(ca. 161 cm)
-conclusion: the animal died and then sunk
new words:
mire: 陷入困境; 泥潭
mastodon: 庞然大物,乳齿象
hind leg: 后腿
anterior & posterior: 前面和后面 dextra & sinistral 右边和左边
ca. 大约
