238.鸟飞翔的起源
P1 - two scenarios concerning the origins of bird flight: the "arboreal" and the "cursorial" hypotheses.
Arboreal - bird ancestors began to fly by climbing trees and gliding down from branches with the help of incipient feathers.
This hypothesis makes intuitive sense, but certain aspects are troubling.
e.g. Archaeopteryx(A)
1/ have no arboreal adaptation such as feet for perching
2/ how can it both climbed and flew with its forelimbs
3/ no plants taller than a few meters in the environments where A fossils have been found
4/ gliding ability
P2 - Cursorial - small dinosaurs ran along the ground and stretched out the arms for balance as they leaped into the air to avoid predators.
Rudimentary feathers could enhance lift=> larger feathers could have increased lift, untill flight was archieved.
the hypothesis is strengtherned by the fact that the immediate theropod dinosaur ancestors fo birds were terrestrial and the traits such as: small, agile...
And because they are bipedal=> arms were free to evolve
