[Main Idea] The development and different hypothesis for lava transport in melting region.
[Structure] P1: H in 1960s & problem P2: H in 1970s & problem P3: Author's H in 1980s
[Each Paragraph] P1: Hypothesis in late 1960s: while melt goes up to lower pressure like rock sweat, it dissolves orthopyroxene and leave behind olivine. Problem: How can most mid-ocean ridge lavas which came up from 45km have not dissolved any orthopyroxene? P2: Hypothesis in early 1970s: Cracks allow melt to rise rapidly with no chance to dissolve orthopyroxene. AN examined ophiolites and found dicks. Problem: 1.Dicks are filled with rock that crystallized not below 45km; 2. Mantle flows and cannot crack easily below 10km. P3: The author’s hypothesis in late 1980s: Volume of melt increases as melt rises and from larger channels.
