1: In the early 1800s, Italian botanist Areangeli found the pollination of lily Arisarum proboscideum unbelievable.
The flower chamber has a small window and a 'mousetail'.
2: The appendix is soft, spongy, and full of little depressions. The organ is off-white so the plant seems like a mushroom. Areangeli claimed that the pollinators were female fungus gnats, which were fooled by the mousetail and deposit their eggs in or on the appendix, or even more deeply into the floral chamber. Further research in the 1960s and 1970s confirms the claim.
3: Fungus mimicry is a fairly widespread pollination strategy among forest dwellers.
Describe an unbelievable phenomenon, explain a claim about it and confirm that claim by further findings. |
