Hello There,
Overall, students would learn the American healthcare system from scratch in this program.
Though no background knowledge of healthcare is required, we strongly recommend upcoming students to master at least one of the following area if you want a job here:
1. Bio-related Subjects, 2. Medicine, 3. Advanced Finance, 4. Data Science/Analytics, 5. Economics and Statistics (Theories).
Most of the courses are independent of other programs (e.g., MS Finance, MS Marketing, MBA).
You will learn fundamental theories about healthcare which are correlated to Health Economics, then a few courses about History, Law, and Policies in the United States,
Next, professional Biomedical and Pharma/Medical Devices courses or health-related Information Systems and Finance.
By the end of Spring I, students have to choose their action-based courses in 4 areas, which could even guide you to a job offer!
According to word of mouth from Chinese students, what you learn might not help finding a medical-related job in China.
Most of the class became analysts, consultants, and other specialists in medical-related firms or the health sector, others got finance/marketing jobs with healthcare specialties.
Plus, around 3-5 East Asians successfully get a full-time job here each year (they are the ones who devoted at least 90% of their time for a job search and networking).
The class size was around 30 (and we got a student expelled due to poor academic performance), with approximately 8-12 Chinese students on average.
Around 40% of the class did undergrad in Biomedical/Pharma/Biochem/Biostats... The rest are 1-3 doctors or medical students (MD), 5-6 second (dual) degree students, and a few Finance/Business, or Econ/Stats students.
(Expect some of your classmates to start a company while studying while a few of them worked more than 5 years, and expect to join groups with part-time students, some of them are Johns Hopkins Hospital employees!)
That's a super brief introduction to the program, strongly recommended for students who are equipped with hard skills/working experience, or willing to devote their life blending into the Baltimore societies.
For further questions, you are welcome to chat with me through WeChat, but please clearly identify your questions when asking. Hope the information above helps!
(Note that I was also a second degree Health Care Management student in Carey, now working in the hospital managing 2 Chinese HCM interns. Background: Economic Research.) |
