Regarding the US administrative mandate that an int'l student cannot take courses that are all online, we tend to believe this may not be a big concern. For one thing, many universities are seriously considering a "hybrid" model of instruction, although its feasibility is contingent upon how the pandemic evolves; for another, some may be proactively seeking a solution through their representatives in the US Congress.

While the admissions cycle for the coming year is far off, we would like to briefly discuss and advertise some traditionally "American" universities. Most typical among this breed are Univ. Oklahoma, Univ. Alabama, Louisiana State Univ., Florida State University, and Univ. of Tennessee. University of Alabama is probably the most 'American' of all. By labeling them as such, we mean that they each seem to have had a long-standing preference for enrolling American students, which is obvious from the fact that they have featured rather infrequently in discussions on this forum. In recent years, however, the percentage of international students in each of these programs seems to have been trending upwards, especially at LSU and FSU. This is clear if one views the current student profiles. All int'l students are treated equally as their American counterparts, although a student complained on the forum a while ago that he or she faced "discrimination' in advising and access to resources and services.

Each of the five schools above securely belongs to Tier 3 or Tier 4 in overall placements. Here, we would like to particularly mention the Finance concentration at Oklahoma, which is outstanding and is on a par with or better than those at such schools as Kansas University and Univ. of Colorado. Therefore, we strongly recommend these programs to those whose profiles might be "average" but who aspire for research universities upon graduation.

One poster queried about the placement performance of the HKUST program. As touched upon in prior postings, HKUST graduates have taken positions at research universities (or non-academic research institutions) all over the world, although most have opted to stay in Asia-Pacific region, including HK, Singapore, and Australia. We have just included in our Placement Rankings a few of the school's most distinguished placements, thereby accentuating the competitiveness of its graduates in the North American job market.

The posting on the Econjobrumors forum was a bitter complaint about the leadership behavior in the Finance Dept. at University of Oklahoma, unabashedly calling the head a sociopath. We have no idea whether the poster was commenting as an insider or even based on his or her own experience, or based on rumors. Nevertheless, such information is worthy of note for applicants.

The finance faculty lineup at University of Oklahoma is impressive and is as strong as that at such schools as University of Colorado-Boulder, Buffalo, Arizona, and Iowa.

As the finance job market overall continues to be depressed, it is more and more common for graduates to pursue postdoc positions at research schools or research-based careers elsewhere. This is a reality at top schools, such as Chicago Booth. By no means can Oklahoma do better. By the way, research associate posts at reputed research institutions (such as Federal Reserve banks and Bates & Whites) and leading companies are as competitive as faculty positions at the so-called R1 universities, and usually are only reserved for PhDs from the very top programs.

You are pointing to a potential issue on the part of the Finance faculty at UO, but a closer look may indicate otherwise. Of the senior professors, only two (or three at most) may retire in the next five years or so, and hence the overall faculty research profile will largely remain intact. Also, there are a few prominent mid-career professors, including the department head. However, it is indeed worth noting that UO has hired as many as eight entry-level assistant professors over the past several years. We cannot expect all of them to be rising stars; also, while being preoccupied with building their own credentials, generally they will not be involved in PhD students' dissertations or research. A similar situation is observed at Kansas University Finance Department (and most probably a number of other schools), which features at least five faculty members who seem to be recent PhDs. Those applying to such schools need to take this phenomenon into consideration.

By the way, many finance departments, including the abovementioned, have carried out a vigorous hiring drive in recent years. This is one reason why the finance job market is becoming increasingly tough, esp. for candidates from middle- and lower ranking programs.
