Thank you for your reply. I thought HR working for domestic securities firms should know more than Ivy, but the truth depressed me. I gradually realize that most HR, even those who working for foreign companies, can know very little about foreign universities. Due to large volumes of resumes they receive every day, they don't really have time and incentive to "Baidu" for foreign school rankings. I was told that HR only spent 5-10s to screen a candidate's profile. So it makes great sense to me that they look more at one's undergraduate institution, which is usually a Chinese university that seems more familiar to them.
At least, I am pretty sure that most HR heard about Northwestern University because there is another "西北大学” located in China. Even those who have heard about "美国西北大学”, they almost just know the existence of this university but have no idea about how great it is. That's why I said "西北大学” is not powerful enough.
My friend told me a story: a Chines domestic securities firm hired a fresh graduate student from a Master of Art program at Harvard, which is actually not very competitive in terms of admission, and the curriculum of which has nothing to do with finance. However, this securities firm particularly wrote an article on their official WeChat promotion platform to publicize how exciting for them to get a student from Harvard.
I guess this is because we are inside a "留学圈”,we intend to overestimate of a forien school's reputation among people who are ouside this “留学圈”.
