Books and personal experience, as two indispensable ways to enhance our knowledge, have their own advantages and disadvantages. Reading books is a more convenient and quick way to learn about the world, which will save us a lot of time and money. On the other hand, personal experience grants us direct feeling about the world, without which our life will be a dull book recorded sentences from others. Although it is difficult to judge which way is more important since one way will out weigh another under different circumstances. As far as I am concerned, knowledge gained from experience is usually more valued than that gained from books mainly due to two reasons as following.
First, as people comment, books cannot tell us everything about the whole world. It is true that there are various books concerning various details in our life which may be the accumulation of experiences through different generations, however, life experience is more often than not individual and specific. For example, no matter how detailed an instruction is, one cannot swim without jumping into the swimming pool. In our daily life, without personal experience, people often do not know what the reality is. Besides, there might be some different even conflicting contents that make people confused in so many books. Only through personal experience can one tell which one is right. Furthermore, knowledge from books may be misleading and completely wrong. It is the latter experience that corrects the mistakes in history of science and technology. If everyone believes in the words in books, our society will stay in its prime age without advancement.
Another more subtle reason is that people should experience by themselves even if sometimes books have told us what and how things are. Varieties of books from fiction to nonfiction really tell us a lot about the world, but the knowledge from the books is not tantamount to the knowledge gained from experience. As love stories always tell us that love is a process with bitter-sweetness, will anyone decides not to fall in love after reading a romantic novel?
We cannot deny the importance of books in the knowledge spreading of human history. After all, it can be said to be the most important resource of knowledge besides personal experience. Everyone learns about the world with the combined help of the two useful ways. If one way must be stressed a little, as what is discussed above, knowledge gained from experience will be a little more critical in my eyes.
