很同意这个解释，看到gmat Club上有一个对于instead of 和 rather than 在这里用法的对比，quote在这里
“I would not go so far as to say the GMAT likes the "rather than" construction and doesn't like the "instead of" construction --- that's too black & white and simplistic. I would say, though, you will see much more of the former than of the latter. You see, both "rather than" and "instead of" have similar meanings ---- the replacement of one thing with another ---- but the former is far more versatile than the latter. The construction "instead of" is a preposition, only a preposition, and can only have a noun (or noun-like thing) as its object. By contrast, the construction "rather than" can act as a preposition or a conjunction --- it can link two nouns or two verbs or participial phrases or infinitive phrases, i.e. two complete actions. 额，法官的那个题C哪里错了啊

看了一圈，我觉得此题重点不在于rather than和instead of.

Ron说过“rather than和instead of are almost interchangeable".

A和E本身没有语法问题，平行的不一样。A是a motion to allow和a motion (被省略） to confine
                                                      E是to go和to be confined平行
所以A错在a motion本身并不能confine them to a hotel，motion只能要求或者允许

不要被rather than和instead of迷惑了

C选项seems more likely to do ... rather than do ...，

• 首先 more 后面 对应 than，而非 rather than，
• 其次 两个动词形式要平行，seems to do sth，than 后面也应该用 to do，
• 最后，modifier的用法也不正确，这是从句意可以看出来的：前文说，最近（recently）中国发现的恐龙化石会提供恐龙与鸟的亲缘关系的证据，介词短语 at this stage应该是修饰debate（近期的发现导致目前激烈的争论），而非修饰鸟类的起源。
  

这三点不需要全部掌握，也可以轻松的做出这道题~

C的错误除了介词位置易产生歧义，以及OG所说的要补出平行后半部分的to（我个人觉得这里不是重点，可以补出也可以不补出，毕竟楼下也给出了反例）之外

seems more likelyto do rather than也是非常明显的错误。比较级后面应该是than而不是rather than
