Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has improved the standards of education. Use specific reasons and details to support your position.
Hot discussion always springs up when it comes to this topic whether television has helped improve the standards of education. Of course there are both pro-and-cons of the television, just as coins have two sides. However, as a student who prefers amusing education than those boring regurgitating lectures, I agree that television has helped improve the standards of education.
Television provides more content than traditional lectures. Television is by no means only a machine-TV set, and it represents those multi-media corporation teams where lots of people are working in every corner of the world and presenting overwhelming information to the audiences. It increases the content of traditional education dramatically. Decades ago, a primary school teacher had to describe sea as vast, blue and vigorous in an introductory lessen about marine life. Today’s lucky teacher, however, only needs to switches on the TV set, play a program from the Discovery channel and every single one of his pupils would be definitely clear about what a vast, blue and vigorous sea means.
Moreover, television makes it possible for an interest-oriented study. As the old Chinese proverb says interest makes the best teacher. Students tend to get A+ in those courses interesting to them but get not so good grades in uninteresting ones. Television simply provides a whole set of programs from which educators and students could choose their favorite from. Such a interest-oriented education method probably makes the education more effective.
Television could also be an alternative more accessible education way than the traditional classroom methods. Take a history topic for example. Many students might share the similar experience that the same topic would be much easier to be understood on a TV talk-show program than the boring lectures in the classrooms. Television integrates education into entertainment, which beats traditional lecture.
As mentioned, at the very beginning, that each coin has two sides, there is no denying that there are some side-effect associated with the introduction of television into education. For example, the content of some television programs may not be suitable for a certain age group of students. However, application of the television in education never means simply buying a TV set for the students and let them watch and learn in the crouch at home all by themselves. The teachers or other educators must take their responsibilities to monitor their students’ study. I believe that television stands a big chance to help improve the standard of education and people who work in education system could make this big chance to a true reality.
