There could be several reasons behind. First, if you can't go to their campus, they will feel no-so-sure about you; Second, they worry about your H-1 situation after graduation.
they do hire people from china mainland every year. I know some of them actrually. the fact you dont' see many of them is because that Stern strictly requires on campus interview ( invitation only). And you know that there are not many chinese who can afford to fly to the States only for the interview due to visa issue and this partly explain why not so many there.
That's wrong. Stern admits 4 to 6 Chinese mainland applicants each year and its admission officer flies to China for interview usually around late-Feb to Mid-March. And I believe Stern is for sure Chinese-friendly. Including those who already stay in US for years, Stern has about 10 Chinese students each year comparing with 380 of the total students. That's not a small number.
I do encourage Chinese applicants for NYU Stern, especially for those who wanna work in Financial service industry. Stern will definitely give you a huge advantage on the Street (I mean Wall Street).
Chinese applicants should remember to catch up the deadline of Dec 1 in order to have the interview opportunity. The admission officer will usually conduct interview in Beijing around late-Feb to Mid-March, and the final decision will be made right before April 1.

ok. at least i know one guy entered stern last year from mainland. his gmat scores are 770 and he worked in the field of finance in shanghai. that's all i know.
