Word Selection
TIPS:
1)word selection要根据句意来,尤其是转折句,注意比较二者对比的是什么(babybearmm)
2)Parallelism 优先于 word selection (Ron)

*Althoughthey are crucially important, a person's total calorie intake is only one ofthe many factors that determine if their weight will increase or decrease.
A.they are crucially important, a person's total calorie intake is only one ofthe many factors that determine if their weight will increase or decrease
B. itis crucially important, a person's total calorie intake is only one of the manyfactors that determine whether his or her weight will increase or decrease
C. itis a crucially important factor, a person's total calorie intake is the onlyone of many that determines whether his or her weight will increase or decrease
D.crucially important, a person's total calorie intake is only one of the manyfactors that determines the increase or decrease in their weight
E. itis crucially important, a person's total calorie intake is the only one of manyfactors that determines the increase or decrease in his or her weight
*subjecy- pronoun
  A, they/thier  [size=13.9099998474121px]≠   a person's total calorie intake
  D,their [size=13.9099998474121px]≠ a person's total calorie intake

*determine
  +whether, 而不是if ,A out

*tricky about word selection between " determines" VS "determine"

source:http://forum.chasedream.com/thread-739174-1-1.html
1. “one of the many factors that determine” vs. “one of many factorsthat determines”
单复数决定了后面that-clause描述的到底是”total calorie intake”这一个factor还是”many factors”而这又和全句的逻辑(“although”)密切联系。

2. 您可曾觉得 “determine whether sth will increase or decrease” 有些wordy, clumsy而 ”determine the increase or decrease in sth” 很concise? If so, be careful! 这两者的意思是完全不同的!原句要说的是“决定是增加或是减少”而E选项说的是“决定这个增加或减少的数值(量化)”。

don't split on word choice first. that'snot a smart way to split.

*go with grammar first.
in this case, parallel structure is pretty easy. the sentencemakes it clear that you're comparingnovels, not their authors, so (a),(c), and (d) are instantly out because their second halves mistakenlymention the people themselves as part of the comparison.
(b) is not as parallel as (e), either. since the originalsays "jean toomer's cane", the others should alsohave the form "X's Y", not "Y by X".

--

*word choice is a sticky thing. for instance,it's actually better to say "birds have a four-chamberedheart" than to say "birds have four-chambered hearts", because the formermakes it clear that each bird has exactly 1 heart. both, however, areacceptable.
in a similar vein, the construction of (d) and (e)makes it more clear that each book has exactly 1 author.

remember - don't question correct answers; learnfrom them.

--

*NEVER split on word choice before parallelism(which is possibly the single most important topic in SC). that's arecipe for disaster.

OG:  Logical predication; Grammaticalconstruction; Verb form
Thissentence is intended to be about people who, because they do not trust themselvesto make wise investment decisions, turn to stockbrokers for advice. As the sentenceis worded, however, it is stockbrokers who do not trust themselves to choose wisely. The sentence is made even more incomprehensible by the peculiar placement of theadverbs in the phrase, could be easily bought directly.

D.To buy is not idiomatic in this context—in buyingwould be correct—and the tense of the verb could have been does not match the tenseof the verb earlier in the clause; the point is not that people are turning to stockbrokersfor help in buying stocks that at some earlier time could have been bought directly, but rather that the stocks could be bought by the people directly at the very timethey are seeking help from the stockbrokers.
E. Correct. The opening clause correctly modifiesmany people, and the adverb is correctly placed. The correct answer

OG_explaination
Rhetorical construction;Logical predication; Grammatical construction
Thissentence describes a discovery that occurred in 1884 and provides some additionalinformation about the object that was discovered. The most effectively worded answerchoice opens with a past‐participial phrase(discovered . . .) describing the subject of the sentence, the asteroid Ida. Ida’sdiscovery is logically prior to its naming, described in a second past, followingthe subject (named . . .). The sentence is then completed with a present tense linkingverb is + prepositional phrase to explain Ida’s location.

A,Opening with a past perfect passive verb, Having been named, this version of thesentence illogically suggests that being named for a mythological nymph precededthe discovery of Ida.
B,Correct. This version is clear, logically coherent, and grammatically correct.
C,This version of the sentence is ungrammatical; it has no main verb for the subjectthe asteroid Ida.
D,The sequence of events is obscured by the placement of named before discovered inthe compound participial phrases. The infinitive form to orbit is ungrammaticalin place of the relative clause.
E,This sentence awkwardly attempts to use a compound conjunction and to join the pastparticipial phrase discovered in 1884 with the relative clause which was named.. . . The infinitive form to orbit is ungrammatical in place of the relative clause.

Thecorrect answer is B.

In addition, the  second part of the sentence uses the past tense verb brought, indicating that  the event is over. The verb used in the comparative construction must also be  past tense, x (none) was more concentrated than y (the wave).

(C) so debilitating is it as to become an economic
(D) such is its debilitation, it becomes an economical
(E) there is so much debilitation that it has become an economical

in general, you don't use so ADJ as to VERB unless the VERB describes some sort of state/condition. i.e., if the verb is an action verb, this construction generally isn't used.

for instance,
i am so ugly as to be viscerally repulsive to women. --> this works, because the verb “to be” describes a state/condition.
i am so ugly as to repel women on sight. --> you generally wouldn't see this in good writing, as “repel” is an action verb; the sentence would probably be written as i am so ugly that i repel women on sight.

Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the Neanderthals appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearance during the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.

(A) appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
(B) appear to have been equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
(C) appear as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(D) appeared as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(E) appeared to have been equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,

OA: b

Verb  form; Diction
Because Neanderthals “disappeared,” the verb describing their apparent abilities cannot be present tense, so as equipped must be changed to to have been equipped. The expression equipped to face is clearer and more direct than  equipped for facing.

A As equipped indicates that Neanderthals still appear this way; equipped should be followed by an infinitive form  instead of  a  prepositional phrase.
B Correct. The verb tense clearly indicates that the current evidence is about Neanderthals in the past.
C  As equipped does not indicate that Neanderthals appeared this way  in  the past;  while  individual
Neanderthals may well have followed different paths, this sentence is about the single evolutionary path taken by  Neanderthals as a species.
D Present-tense appear is needed to parallel present-tense indicates and to reinforce that this is current evidence about Neanderthals in  the past;  as in  (C), paths should be singular.
E For facing is an incorrect substitution  of a  prepositional phrase for an   infinitive.

!!!!excellent explanation on tense issue
tense problem is not mainly grammer problem;
it's more about meaning of the sentence.

句意:

The N appear to have been…… , but their disappearance indicates that……

两个分句都是在讲N这个人,现在看来 当时是准备好面对任何困难的, 但是他们的消失 现在 表明他们并不能适应那些导致他们灭绝的环境。

A 1972 agreement between Canada and the United States reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump into the Great Lakes.

(A) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump
(B) reduced the phosphate amount that municipalities had been dumping
(C) reduces the phosphate amount municipalities have been allowed to dump
(D) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump

(E) reduces the amount of phosphates allowed for dumping by municipalities

OA: D

Verb  form; Idiom
An agreement that occurred in 1972 is correctly described with the past tense verb reduced. Since the dumping continued after the date of the agreement, the past perfect verb had been allowed should instead be the present are allowed (if the agreement remained in effect when the sentence was written) or the past were allowed (if the agreement was no longer in effect when the sentence was written).Since were allowed does not appear in any of the options, we can assume that the correct verb tense is are allowed. The phrase amount of phosphates is clear and idiomatically  correct, whereas phosphate  amount is not  idiomatic.

A The past perfect tense indicates that the condition referred to was no longer in effect at the time of the agreement. The agreement could not have retroactively changed what was no longer in existence. The sentence refers to a continuing (but modified) prescription as to the allowable amount, not to an amount that is actually dumped. Thus, it is preferable to use either the simple past tense or the timeless present tense.
B The phosphate amount should be the amount of phosphates; the omission of some form of allow is incorrect since the agreement changed not the amount dumped, but the amount permitted to be dumped.
C Present tense reduces should be the past tense reduced; the phosphate amount should be the amount of phosphates;  have been  allowed should be are  allowed.
D Correct. The past tense reduced is correctly used in this sentence to describe a past action, and the present tense are allowed is used to describe the continuing applicability of the modified rule or regulation.
E Present tense reduces should be the past tense reduced; allowed for dumping is an incorrect idiom; allowed for  dumping by  municipalities is awkward.
By Ron:"

1,Reduce" is not an ongoing state of existence. It's something that happens at one particular point in time.
That point in time was in 1972. So, past tense.
Analogy: I lost a bunch of weight in 2010. I can't write "I lose weight" now... because it happened in 2010.
Reduced, lost, same idea.

2,You have to read those choices literally.
"The amount they had been allowed to dump", and/or "...had been dumping", are historical figures. They're a done deal; they can't be changed.

If this still doesn't make sense to you, put a (pre-1972) year on them. E.g., the amounts that were specified in 1969.
Perhaps that will make it more clear"”you can't reduce the amounts that were specified in 1969, because they were specified in 1969. (The current figure can represent a diminution from those historical figures, but a diminution of those figures is impossible; we can't change history.)

there are two things wrong with (b).

one:
the use of the past perfect (had flowed) is inappropriate, because there is no second past-time marker or event to which this first event is relevant.
compare: the rivers had originally flowed into the st. lawrence, but then their course was divertedby...
the correct tense to use here would be the simple past, because this is the only past time frame referenced in the whole sentence.

two:
'by constructing' seems to refer back to the rivers as its ostensible subject, implying (absurdly) thatthe rivers themselves constructed the canals.

Scientists have dated sharp-edged flakes of stone found in the fine-grained sediments of a dry riverbed in the Afar region of Ethiopia to between 2.52 and 2.60 million years ago, pushing back by more than 150,000 years the earliest date when it is known that humans made stone tools.

A. when it is known that humans made
B. at which it is known that humans had made
C. at which humans are known to have made
D. that humans are known to be making
E. of humans who were known to make

in this sort of construction, i'm pretty sure that either "when" or "at which" would be acceptable. (clearly, the latter is acceptable -- it appears in the correct answer, after all -- but i wouldn't object to the former.)
if you want to get really subtle, i think (not 100% sure) that "the date when" is used for actual, precise calendar dates, whereas "the date at which" is used for the usually more vague dates ofhistorical events, such as the one in this problem. but i'm sure the test is not going to depend on this sort of nuanced difference.

i think the real problem with the construction in choice (a) is that the clause following "when" is "it is known". in other words, that choice suggests that the fact is (was?) known at that date, an interpretation that clearly doesn't make sense in context.in the correct answer, the "at which" is followed by a clause whose subject is "humans", and which describes the actual action that took place at that date. therefore, i think the idea is that this clause more accurately describes the chronology of the events: i.e., the toolmaking happened at that date, and the fact is known now.

as for your other question, this isn't really a perfect tense, because it's actually not a tense at all -- it's an infinitive.
probably the easiest way to go here is to remember this as an idiomatic usage of the construction "known to". if the action is in the present, then you use "known to VERB"; if the action is in the past, then you use "known to have VERBed". as far as i know, these are the only two possible forms.

heh. it looks like choice (a) is an"indian trap"
seriously, not a joke.
if there is a single biggest issue in the grammar of second-languageenglish speakers who happento hail from india or pakistan, thatissue is the drastic overuse of the "are ...ing"construction. (native speakers of english will recognize "areproducing" at once as awkward.)

another problem with part (a) is the modifier. although"providing... and milking..." is agrammatically acceptablemodifier, it doesn't make any sense in context, since these are not two thingsthat farmers do WHILE or AS A CONSEQUENCE OF keeping the cows cool.(if you're going touse comma + -ing, then one of these two should hold.)
see #124 (og 12th edition) or #127 (og 11th edition), correct answer, for asentence in which such a modifier actually does make sense.

B has a verb tense issue. It says "species that appeared" on earth. Appeared is simple past but, in this case, we want present perfect. We use past tense to discuss something that is completely over; we use present perfect to discuss something that started in the past but is either still true or still going on in the present. It is still true that the species appeared, so we want to say "have appeared"
