CR bible, manattan CR
题目: 用了OG13/15/16, prep08

1. 读不懂文章,这是基础的问题,请先把长难句把RC过一遍;

In Borania manypeople who want to quit smoking wear nicotine skin patches, which deliver smalldoses of nicotine through the skin. Beginning next month, these patches can bepurchased without a doctor's prescription. Although nonprescription patcheswill be no more effective than those obtained by prescription and will beequally expensive, patch manufacturers are nevertheless predictingthat the patches' new nonprescription status will boost sales, which haveslowed considerably in recent years.

D. Many smokerswho want to quit smoking feel that they cannot afford to visit a doctor for aprescription. ----

When people engagein activities that help others, their brain releases endorphins, the brain’snatural opiates, which induce in people a feeling of well-being. It has beensuggested that regular release of endorphins increases people’s longevity, anda statistic on adults who regularly engage in volunteer work helping othersshows that they live longer, on average, than adults who do not volunteer. However, that statisticwould be what we would expect even if volunteeringdoes not boost longevity, because __________.

however之前一直在说volunteer work和happiness 啊endorphins的关系。
A. in thecommunities studied, women were much more likely to do regular volunteer workthan men were, and women tend to live longer than men do

At present the hollywood restaurant has only standard-height tables. However, many customers come to watch the celebrities who frequent the Hollywood, and they would prefer tall tables with stools because such seating would afford a better view of the celebrities. Moreover, diners seated on stools typically do not stay as long as diners seated at standard-height tables. Therefore, if the Hollywood replaced some of its seating with high tables and stools, its profits would increase.

The argument is vulnerable to criticism on the grounds that it gives reason to believe that it is likely that
A) Some celebrities come to the Hollywood to be seen, and so might choose to sit at the tall tables if they were available
B) The price of meals ordered by celebrities dining at the Hollywood compensates for the longer time, if any, they spend lingering over their meals
C) A customer of the Hollywood who would choose to sit at a tall table would be an exception to the generalization about lingering
D) A restaurant's customers who spend less time at their meals typically order less expensive meals than those who remain at their meals longer
E) With enough tall tables to accommodate all of the Hollywood's customers interested in such seating, there would be no view except of other tall tables
为什么用“The argument is vulnerable to criticism on the grounds that itgives reason to believe that it is likely that”这么长一句话来提问,而不是简单的“strengthen和weaken”来提问,说明玄机就在这儿提问的句子中!
这句话的意思是:“因为the argument gives reasons to believe下面哪一项,所以导致这个argument非常vulnerable?”

Businesses aresuffering because of a lack of money available for development loans. To helpbusinesses, the government plans to modify the income-tax structure in order toinduce individual taxpayers to put a larger portion of their incomes intoretirement savings accounts, because as more money is deposited in suchaccounts, more money becomes available to borrowers.

Which of thefollowing, if true, raises the most serious doubtregarding the effectiveness of the government’s planto increase the amount of money available fordevelopment loans for businesses?
(A) When levels of personal retirement savingsincrease, consumer borrowing always increases correspondingly.

Editorial:Regulations recently imposed by the government of Risemia call forunprecedented reductions in the amounts of pollutants manufacturers are allowedto discharge into the environment. It will take costly new pollution controlequipment requiring expensive maintenance to comply with these regulations.Resultant price increases for Risemian manufactured goods will lead to the lossof some export markets.Clearly, therefore, annualexports of Risemian manufactured goods will in the future occur at diminishedlevels.

A. The need tocomply with the new regulations will stimulate the development within Risemiaof new pollution control equipment for which a strong worldwide demand islikely to emerge.

OG113. The averagehourly wage of television assemblers in Vinland has long been significantlylower than that in neighboring Bordia. Since Bordia dropped all tariffs on Vinlandtelevisions three years ago, the number of televisions sold annually in Bordiahas not changed. However, recent statistics show a drop in the number of televisionassemblers in Bordia. Therefore, updated trade statistics will probablyindicate that the number of televisions Bordia imports annually from Vinlandhas increased.

(C) The averagenumber of hours it takes a Bordia television assembler to assemble a televisionhas not decreased significantly during the past three years.

5. 考小词
A recent reportdetermined that although only 3 percent of drivers on Maryland highwaysequipped their vehicles with radar detectors, 33 percent of all vehiclesticketed for exceeding the speed limit were equipped with them. Clearly, drivers who equip their vehicles with radar detectors are more likely to exceedthe speed limit regularly than are drivers who do not.
The conclusiondrawn above depends on which of the following assumptions?

(B)Drivers who are ticketed for exceeding the speed limit are more likely to exceedthe speed limit regularly than are drivers who are not ticketed.

我们来read the stimulus very carefully. Specific Time.

Althoughfullerenes--spherical molecules made entirely of carbon--were first found inthe laboratory, they have since been found innature, formed in fissures of the rare mineral shungite. Sincelaboratory synthesis of fullerenes requires distinctive conditions oftemperature and pressure, this discovery should give geologists a test case forevaluating hypotheses about the state of the Earth's crust at the time thesenaturally occurring fullerenes were formed.
结论:thisdiscovery可以检测state of the earth's crust at the timefullerenes were formed.
正确答案作用:此discovery对于检测the state of Earth's crust at the time fullerenes没有用
Connection: theassumption that the way the fullerenes were formed in the lab is analogous tothe way they were formed in nature.

Some fullereneshave also been found on the remains of a small meteorite that collided with aspacecraft.
这是个无关选项,题目里“thisdiscovery should give geologists a test case for evaluating hypotheses aboutthe state of the Earth's crust at the time 【these】 naturally occurring fullerenes were formed.” Somefullerenes have also been found on the remains of a small meteorite,

Thenaturally occurring fullerenes are arranged in a previously unknown crystalline structure.
Thenaturally occurring Earth fullerenes are definitely of a different structurethan the lab-made ones. If that's the case, then I can't just assume that theprocess to make them in the lab is analogous to the process to make themnaturally.

2
One summer, floodscovered low-lying garlic fields situated in a region with a large mosquitopopulation. Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, flooded fieldswould normally attract mosquitoes, yet no mosquitoes were found in the fields.Diallyl sulfide, a major component of garlic, is known to repel several species of insects, including mosquitoes, so it is likely that diallyl sulfide from the garlicrepelled the mosquitoes.

(D) Many insectspecies not repelled by diallyl sulfide were found in the flooded garlic fieldsthroughout the summer.

Well this is new supporting premise. Many other species not repelled by diallylsulfide are available in the fields. So, we have a reason to believe that sincediallyl sulfide repeal mosquito not some other insect species hence mosquitopopulation is low.

Excavations of theRoman city of Sephora have uncovered numerous detailed mosaics depictingseveral readily identifiable animal species: a hare, a partridge, and variousMediterranean fish. Oddly, most of the species represented did not live in theSephora region when these mosaics were created. Since identical motifs appearin mosaics found in other Roman cities, however, the mosaics of Sephora werevery likely created by traveling artisans from some other part of the RomanEmpire.

A. The Sephoramosaics are not composed exclusively of types of stones found naturally in theSephora area.

E. There was not acommon repertory (仓库, 储存) of mosaic designs with which artisans who lived in various partsof the Roman Empire were familiar.

Earlyin the twentieth century, Lake Konfa became very polluted.  Recently fishpopulations have recovered as release of industrial pollutants has declined andthe lake’s waters have become cleaner.  Fears are now being voiced thatthe planned construction of an oil pipeline across the lake’s bottommight revive pollution and cause the fish population to declineagain.  However,a technology for preventing leaks is being installed.  Therefore, provided thistechnology is effective, those fears are groundless.
Assumption:
B.There is no reason to believe that the leak-preventing technology would beineffective when installed in the pipeline in Lake Konfa. ×
