SouthingtonUniversity's fund-raisers succeeded in getting donations from 80 percent of thepotential donors they contacted this year. This rate would be the expected rateif the only potential donors contacted were those who have donated in the past. But good fund-raisers constantly contact less likely prospects in an effort toexpand the donor base. Thus the high success rate, far from showing that thefund-raisers did a good job, shows insufficient canvassing effort.

Whichof the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

A. Among potential donors contacted bySouthington University's fund-raisers, the majority of those who did not makedonations were people who had made donations to the university in the past.
B. The amount of money raised bySouthington University's fundraisers this year was lower than the amount theyhad raised in any of the previous several years.
C. Individual donations made toSouthington University this year were, on average, slightly larger than wereaverage individual donations made to many other universities.
D. Fund-raisers contacting past donorsare not only to get new donations but also to get names of potential new donorsto contact.
E.The majority of the donations that fund-raisers succeeded in getting for SouthingtonUniversity were from donors who had never given to the university before.

我纠结在A和E选项之间 正确答案是E

那什么、没懂

A. Among potential donors contacted by Southington University's fund-raisers, the majority of those who did not make donations were people who had made donations to the university in the past.

Form A, we can know the majority of the potential donators who did not make donations were not new donators - they had made donations in the past.

The stimulus tells us old donators are more likely to donate repeatedly.
We can reasonable conclude that the donator who donate this time more than likely are old donators.
This conclusion goes along with the assumption of the author and thus is a strengthen choice not a weaken choice.

The author claims that the high success rate  does not mean a good job but shows that the fund-raiser did not make effort to solicit new donator instead of people who have already donate to the school. To bolster this conclusion, the arguer cites the fact that 80% success rate can be expected when the only potential donator contracted were people who have donated and the fact that  good fund-raisers constantly contact less likely prospects in an effort to expand the donor base.

This argument is flawed because the author assumes the fund-raisers indeed  have contracted people who have donated to the school rather than new donators.

E is the correct choice because it points out this assumption untrue.

A is at best a irrelevent choice and at worst a strengthen choice.
