In the years following an eight-cent increase in the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes, sales of cigarettes fell ten percent. In contrast, in the year prior to the tax increase, sales had fallen one percent. The volume of cigarette sales is therefore strongly related to the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes.

The argument above requires which of the following assumptions?

答案是D,个人感到难以理解。如果以“取非消弱”的技巧来做这道假设题,那么D中去掉not的话,是如何削弱了原文呢?

If you negate D, you have:
For the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes was eight or more cents lower than it had been the previous year.
If this is the case, then the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes with the tax hike does not change from that without the tax hike. Thus, the conclusion that "The volume of cigarette sales is therefore strongly related to the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes" is wrong, because the after tax price correlates with two different sales numbers.
