57.    (34655-!-item-!-188;#058&007580)

Roland:  The alarming fact is that 90 percent of the people in this country now report that they know someone who is unemployed.

Sharon:  But a normal, moderate level of unemployment is 5 percent, with 1 out of 20 workers unemployed.  So at any given time if a person knows approximately 50 workers, 1 or more will very likely be unemployed.

Sharon's argument is structured to lead to which of the following as a conclusion?

(A) The fact that 90% of the people know someone who is unemployed is not an indication that unemployment is abnormally high.
(B) The current level of unemployment is not moderate.
(C) If at least 5% of workers are unemployed, the result of questioning a representative group of people cannot be the percentage Roland cites.
(D) It is unlikely that the people whose statements Roland cites are giving accurate reports.
(E) If an unemployment figure is given as a certain percent, the actual percentage of those without jobs is even higher.

Frobisher, a sixteenth-century English explorer, had soil samples from Canada’s Kodlunarn Island examined for gold content.  Because high gold content was reported, Elizabeth I funded two mining expeditions.  Neither expedition found any gold there.  Modern analysis of the island’s soil indicates a very low gold content.  Thus the methods used to determine the gold content of Frobisher’s samples must have been inaccurate.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A.    The gold content of the soil on Kodlunarn Island is much lower today than it was in the sixteenth century.
B.    The two mining expeditions funded by Elizabeth I did not mine the same part of Kodlunarn Island.
C.    The methods used to assess gold content of the soil samples provided by Frobisher were different from those generally used in the sixteenth century.
D.    Frobisher did not have soil samples from any other Canadian island examined for gold content.
E.    Gold was not added to the soil samples collected by Frobisher before the samples were examined.

14.    (26835-!-item-!-188;#058&002982)

The higher the level of certain vitamins and minerals in the bloodstream, the better a person's lung function, as measured by the amount of air the person can expel in one second.  The lung function of smokers is significantly worse, on average, than that of nonsmokers.  Clearly, therefore, one way for smokers to improve their lung function is for them to increase their intake of foods that are rich in these helpful vitamins and minerals.

Which of the following is an assumption on which this argument depends?

(A) Smokers are less likely than nonsmokers to have diets that are rich in vitamins and minerals.
(E) Smoking does not introduce into the body chemicals that prevent the helpful vitamins and minerals from entering the bloodstream.

Parasitic wasps lay their eggsdirectly into the eggs of various host insects in exactly the right numbers forany suitable size of host egg.  If theylaid too many eggs in a host egg, the developing wasp larvae would compete witheach other to the death for nutrients and space.  If too few eggs were laid, portions of thehost egg would decay, killing the wasp larvae.

Which of the following conclusionscan properly be drawn from the information above?

(A) The size of the smallest hostegg that a wasp could theoretically parasitize can be determined from thewasp's egg-laying behavior.

(B) Host insects lack any effectivedefenses against the form of predation practiced by parasitic wasps.

(C) Parasitic wasps learn fromexperience how many eggs to lay into the eggs of different host species.

(D) Failure to lay enough eggswould lead to the death of the developing wasp larvae more quickly than wouldlaying too many eggs.

(E) Parasitic wasps use visualclues to calculate the size of a host egg.

OA:A。

According to the TristateTransportation Authority, making certain improvements to the main commuter railline would increase ridership dramatically. The authority plans to finance these improvements over the course offive years by raising automobile tolls on the two highway bridges along theroute the rail line serves.  Although theproposed improvements are indeed needed, the authority's plan for securing thenecessary funds should be rejected because it would unfairly force drivers toabsorb the entire cost of something from which they receive no benefit.

Which of the following, if true, would cast the most doubt on the effectiveness of the authority's plan tofinance the proposed improvements by increasing bridge tolls?

(A) Before the authority increasestolls on any of the area bridges, it is required by law to hold public hearingsat which objections to the proposed increase can be raised.

(B) Whenever bridge tolls areincreased, the authority must pay a private contractor to adjust the automatedtoll-collecting machines.

(C) Between the time a proposedtoll increase is announced and the time the increase is actually put intoeffect, many commuters buy more tokens than usual to postpone the effects ofthe increase.

(D) When tolls were last increasedon the two bridges in question, almost 20 percent of the regular commutertraffic switched to a slightly longer alternative route that has since beenimproved.

(E) The chairman of the authorityis a member of the Tristate Automobile Club that has registered strongopposition to the proposed toll increase.

OA:D。我A了...

Crops can be traded on the futuresmarket before they are harvested.  If apoor corn harvest is predicted, prices of corn futures rise; if a bountifulcorn harvest is predicted, prices of corn futures fall.  This morning meteorologists are predictingmuch-needed rain for the corn-growing region starting tomorrow.  Therefore, since adequate moisture isessential for the current crop's survival, prices of corn futures will fallsharply today.

Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument above?

(A) Corn that does not receiveadequate moisture during its critical pollination stage will not produce abountiful harvest.

(B) Futures prices for corn havebeen fluctuating more dramatically this season than last season.

(C) The rain that meteorologistspredicted for tomorrow is expected to extend well beyond the corn-growingregion.

(D) Agriculture experts announcedtoday that a disease that has devastated some of the corn crop will spreadwidely before the end of the growing season.

(E) Most people who trade in cornfutures rarely take physical possession of the corn they trade.

OA:D。我又A了。。。

A certain mayor has proposed a feeof five dollars per day on private vehicles entering the city, claiming thatthe fee will alleviate the city's traffic congestion.  The mayor reasons that, since the fee willexceed the cost of round-trip bus fare from many nearby points, many peoplewill switch from using their cars to using the bus.

Which of the following statements,if true, provides the best evidence that the mayor's reasoning is flawed?

(A) Projected increases in theprice of gasoline will increase the cost of taking a private vehicle into thecity.

(B) The cost of parking feesalready makes it considerably more expensive for most people to take a privatevehicle into the city than to take a bus.

(C) Most of the people currentlyriding the bus do not own private vehicles.

(D) Many commuters opposing themayor's plan have indicated that they would rather endure traffic congestionthan pay a five-dollar-per day fee.

(E) During the average workday, private vehicles owned and operated by people living within the city accountfor twenty percent of the city's traffic congestion.

OA:B。我E了~

Thx~~
