Hey there,
So yes, not working when you apply can be a problem. Because the most important thing for Bschool is your work experience, and if you aren’t advancing…. It doesn't mean you CAN’T get in, but it will make it harder. So now that your GMAT is done, I would suggest looking for another PE job (the better the job, the better for you).
But whatever the case, make sure you aren’t doing nothing for the next year and a half. The Bschools want to see that you have a PLAN. And that you are working to it.
Otherwise, if you have that, and some good extras, I think S16 can be reasonable.
