No.125  Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All students should be required to study art and music in secondary school. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

Secondary schools usually serve a variety of subjects for students to study, from English to biology, from math to music, etc., including almost all of the fundamental subjects. Some people hold the point of view that art and music are useless and hence would be better set as optional courses; others, however, take the negative attitude. They assert that art and music should be required to study. As far as I am concerned, there is no need to put any emphasis on what the the advantages of art and music are.

First and foremost, the main reason for my propensity can be summarized in one saying that art and music are useful in our daily life, especially for our understanding of some other subjects, such as math and science. According to a recent survey, ont only is learning music beneficial for left brains, but can help get balance between the functional qualities of the left and right brains as well. According to a recent survey, compared with those who never had music educations, people who study music are probably easier to understand math problems.

Another equally essential factor why I advocate the study of art and music is that behind art and music exist certain culture and history. It is well-known that the development of art and music is accompanied with the progress of human history. For instance, it is the cave paintings, which are traced back to the primitive society, are typical representatives of early types of art. Besides, history and culture are essential to our human being. Without them, hardly can we learn anthing about our society. For instance, the terra-cotta army, which were built in Qin Dynasty in ancient China, is a typical representative of our nation, even the national personalities of our people.

On the other hand, people who attack the compulsive study of art and music claim that it is not wise since only the kind of study that follows the students’ interests can be rewarding. As a matter of fact, seldom did they notice that, usually the utmost effective study can be achieved only when strongly requirement.

For the reasons presented above, I strongly commit to the notion that the study of art and music should be implemented for all students. Not only because art and music are helpful, but because they are the witness of the human history.
