括号当中的倒底应该是"but" 还是填"but are" ? 若有高人指点，感激不尽~~

因为NOT前面已经有ARE了，应该是NOT sth  BUT STH

这题是PREP中原题，应该是BUT ARE，因为BUT有介词的意思，就是除了。。。如果是BUT，很可能会造成歧义，就是they enhance reproduction or survival, ( ...) simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments，将 reproduction or survival but simply random by-products..这三个并列了，加了ARE就很确定是连词，消除歧义
