我觉得这个it是形式主语,指代的是后面的 to be a ...

我也觉得是形式主语,貌似叫什么placeholder it,曼哈顿的12章
2、代词it 变换位置
(1)不定式做主语,通常用it作形式主语  It is futile to resist temptation.  TO RESIST temptation is futile.

说得好像是在移居他国成为一种时尚之前,blabla……

想问这道题的c选项的解释:Inversion of the expected word order in to be an expatriate was unfashionable is awkward. 是什么意思?为什么会提到unfashionable?

1. Postpone Infinitive Subjects
Awkward: TO RESIST temptation is futile.
The subject of the sentence is the infinitive phrase to resist temptation. Although this sentence is grammatically correct, the GMAT usually avoids similar sentences on stylistic grounds.
Better: It is futile TO RESIST temptation.
It is now the grammatical subject. As a pronoun, it refers to the infinitive phrase to resist temptation.
Under other circumstances, it cannot normally refer to an infinitive.
