A psychiatrist before he was a neuroscientist, Kandel came to his new discipline because he wanted more testable, physical explanations of human behavior than 1950s psychiatry could provide. And he came to the country he now calls home, the U.S., while fleeing the Nazis and the great upheaval that was World War II.
