132All students should be required to take the driver's education course at Centerville High School. In the past two years, several accidents in and around Centerville have involved teenage drivers. Since a number of parents in Centerville have complained that they are too busy to teach their teenagers to drive, some other instruction is necessary to ensure that these teenagers are safe drivers. Although there are two driving schools in Centerville, parents on a tight budget cannot afford to pay for driving instruction. Therefore an effective and mandatory program sponsored by the high school is the only solution to this serious problem."
In this argument, the author recommendsthat the only way to solve this serious problem is sponcoring an effective andmandatory program by the High school. To support this claim the author pointout that several accidents around C have involved teenage drivers in the pasttwo years. In addition, some parents are too busy to teach their teenagers todrive and some can not afford to pay for driving instruction. For the reasonthat, some instruction is necessary to ensure the teenagers be safe drivers.However, the argument relies on substantiated assumptions and is thereforeunconvincing.
Frist and foremost, the writer implies thatsome teenage drivers were involved in several accidents around Centerville,thus the high school should set up an effective and mendatory program would benecessary. However, there is no information shows that the teenage drivers havecaused the accidents directly. Perhaps, they were passengers when the accidentsjust happened. Further more, poor driving ability is not the reason for theaccident, the weather problems and people do not obey the traffic rules couldalso cause the accident. The writer unfairly claims that teenage driversinvolved is the result of teenage drivers cause the accidents rather than otherphenomenon.
In addition, number of parents are too busyto teach their teenagers to drive and some can not afford the cost for drivelessons. So they recommend the school setting up a necessary program for theirchildren. But, have no time to teach their children to drive does notnecessarily imply that the parents are unable to ensure their children to besafe drivers. The enough driving courses are not equal to a safe driver still.To be a qualifled driver, we should not only understand the mathod of drivingbut also obey the traffic rules. Moreover, the author fails to inform us thepercentage of parents who have no time to teach their children and who are on atight budgets. The survey does not priovide compete information concerning theconnection between parents own problems and safe driving.
Finally, the editor recommend that the onlyway to solve the problem is setting up an effective and mandatory program bythe high school. Even if that an effective and mandatory program may to someextent help to solve the problem, the author overlooks the possibility that theadults have the responsibility to teach teenagers to obey the traffic rules.Not only as drivers, but also as passers-by. In addition, the editor fails toconsider if the school has enough funding to sponsor the program, and ifchildren will accept it. Education should be moderate. We do not know if weforce the children to attending the program will receive a good result.
In the final analysis, the conclusionreached in this argument is invalid and misleading. To make it logicallyacceptable, the argument should provide more evidence that teenage drivers arethe main responsibility for accidents. Additionally, the arguer should considerthe possiblity of other solution to this serious problem. |
