Citizens of Parktown are worried by the increased frequency of serious crimes committed by local teenagers. In response, the city government has instituted a series of measures designed to keep teenagers at home in the late evening. Even if the measures succeed in keeping teenagers at home, however, they are unlikely to affect the problem that concerns citizens, since most crimes committed by local teenagers take place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Which of the following, if true, most substantially weakens the argument?

正确答案: B

Whichof the following, if true, most substantially weakens the argument?
A.Similar measures adopted in other places have failed to reduce the number ofteenagers on the streets in the late evening.
B.The crimes committed by teenagers in the afternoon are mostly small thefts andinconsequential vandalism.
C.Teenagers are much less likely to commit serious crimes when they are at homethan when they are not at home.
D.Any decrease in the need for police patrols in the late evening would not meanthat there could be more intensive patrolling in the afternoon.
E.The schools in Parktown have introduced a number of after-school programs thatwill be available to teenagers until 6 p.m. on weekday afternoons.

我选得E。。但是答案居然给的是B。。实在觉得B是不相关信息啊。。求助各位,到底应该选哪个??

i think B is right. It said"The crimes committed by teenagers in the afternoon are mostly small thefts and inconsequential vandalism". Thus, the crimes committed by teenagers in the afternoon are so insignificant that citizens won't be concerned about them.

SO, B can weaken the argument that" they are unlikely to affect the problem that concerns citizens, since most crimes committed by local teenagers take place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m."

呃。。有答案了。。提供给大家吧。

Problem is that city people are concerned with the increase of frequency in seriouscrimes. The word serious is the key here.

Conclusion is that the measure to keep children after 6 pm/ late evening will not help because most crime happens between 3 and 6

We have to prove that measures will be effective. What if the crimes that happen between 3 and 6 are petty and inconsequential? Not serious any more?? measures are effective. Hence B

To me A,C, D are out of scope. E makes an attempt but because E does not tell us whether the teens will stay in school. An assumption needs to be made to weaken the conclusion. Hence B is better。

The first sentence says "Citizensof Parktown are worried by the increased frequency of serious crimes committedby local teenagers." Note the modifier SERIOUS.

If B is right, the argument falls apart because the petty crimes are not concerns of the citizens and petty crimes happens between 3 pm and 6 pm.
