Bad pruning practices

The narrator in the lecture advanced the challenging view that bad pruning can cause many problems and demonstrated it in various aspects as follows, casting doubt on tree pruning which was mentioned in the reading passage.

First of all, the narrator stated an example of his client whose silver maple tree received bad pruning. The tree was pruned both 15 years ago and a few years ago, and now it is having many weak limbs which annoy the client very much. The tree is supposed to have one major trunk and three to four branches instead of seven limbs; however, the tree grows limbs after bad pruning. The narrator addressed that this is a bad example for pruning trees resulted from people’s inadequate skills and views for pruning. People think pruning makes trees smaller, yet the pruned trees actually speed up growing, contradicting the idea in reading passage that pruning eliminates wild growth. Also, pruning causes the trees become more stressful because pruned trees are more susceptible to diseases and insect growing, which is against the idea that removing diseased and broken branches. Since some trees depend much on the leaves to make nutrition, they will be starved after pruning. They also grow weak limbs which cannot stand hazard and bad weather, as stated in the previous example. Pruning destroys the natural shapes of the trees as well, opposing the idea in reading passage that pruning enhances the natural shape and beauty of the trees.

In conclusion, bad pruning only causes more problems in trees according to the professor in the lecture.

                                                        Subjects such as art, music, and drama should be a part of every child’s basic education.



It is always understandable that different people have various points of view. From where I sit, I agree with this statement from three conspicuous aspects as follows:

Firstly, art, music and drama are fundamental to a child’s aesthetic study. Whether a child loves art or not, he or she will certainly benefit from these study. Study of art, music and drama is useful and significant. Children studied these subjects can easily understand the meaning behind the artworks rather than just simply stating that an artwork is “pretty” or not. These subjects bring a whole new world of art to the child studying it, so it should be definitely on the curriculum.

Secondly, children studying these subjects will enjoy great pleasure from these fabulous artworks. A scientific study shows that music can actually affects the plants’ growth. Scientists play music to one group of plant and do not play music for another “control group”; they found out that the first group has both better rate of growth and more colorful petals. Similarly, human brains are advantageous from appreciating arts. My own experience of playing piano gives me relax and pleasure after a day of intensive studying. Therefore, these subjects can most likely help children release the tension and pressure, so they should be a part of every child’s basic education.

Thirdly, children studying art develop their brain better than those who do not. Some experiments conclude that children playing musical instrument before ten-year-old may be more successful in mathematics than those who do not play. These experiments proved well that children can not only relax their brains but also enhance them during studying art.

In summary, subjects such as art, music and drama should be a part of every child’s basic education because it is fundamental to every child’s aesthetic study, it can help children relax and develop their brains better.
