When Jamaican-born social activist Marcus Garvey came to the United States in 1916, he arrived at precisely the right historical moment. What made the moment right was the return of African American soldiers from the First World War in 1918, which created an ideal constituency for someone with Garvey's message of unity, pride, and improved conditions for African American communities.

　　Hoping to participate in the traditional American ethos of individual success, many African American people entered the armed forces with enthusiasm, only to find themselves segregated from white troops and subjected to numerous indignities. C. has argued that when a perceptible gap arises between a culture’s expectations and the reality of that culture, the resulting tension can inspire a revitalization movement: an organized, conscious effort to construct a culture that fulfills longstanding expectations.

如下是我的理解呢，如有不严谨的地方，有望指出，互相提升哈。

Garvey created the consciousness; (Helps to rule out answer A. C. D) 2. The largest revitalization is based on the created consciousness, 或者说来created consciousness –> largest revitalization movement (Help to rule out answer E) ）But such an argument only tends to obscure the consciousness of identity, strength, and sense of history that already existed in the African American community. Garvey did not create this consciousness; rather, he gave this consciousness its political expression.

我是从这段最后一句看的，说他没有create只是有一些新的express，而这一句话是全文作者认为some scholars忽略的内容。所以some scholars会认为他had to change 那些东西。。。

作者认为他没有create 只是express一些新的，那是不是可以理解为scholars认为他create了一些东西。题目问scholers认为哪项为真？可是这和他为了给运动找到一个立足点，而改变了许多占主流的观点有啥联系？还是不太明白，再请解释下

关于B我是这样想的，的确是scholars认为他create了新的东西，B中是说他要去改变流行的观点，这样改变现有的就是一种创新。如果说非要清楚他的运动与主流观点的关系的话，第一题就能很好的帮着理解，他的成功是因为民众此时的consciousness让他的message容易被接受。所以16题B这里就可以理解了，只有主流观点能够接受message才能让他的运动成功。所以他要去改变现有的观点，做出创新。
我是这样想的啦，不知道对不对

我还想问一下。。。E为什么错呢。。。

P1: 1916 MG came at the right time. His message " unity, pride and improved condition" 1918 AA soilder came back from the war.
P2. during the war, soilder join for individual success but found out there are still segregation between white and black --- "unity, pride and improved condition" didnt change
p3: some scholars think he created from he build (from P1, we can see he is popular), so MG must changed his message. --also from 2nd sentence: "But such an argument only tends to obscure the consciousness of identity, strength, and sense of history that already existed in the African American community. Garvey did not create this consciousness; rather, he gave this consciousness its political expression."

E选项当时我选了，后来觉得应该是build on的原因。
build on的意思应该是“在...的基础上发展/扩张”，等于是说有基础。

我想请问上面一题15题。为什么选择D选项they became aware of the gap between their expectations and the realities of American culture?
我选的是C they joined political organizations to protest the segregation of African American troops and the indignities they suffered in the military.
