Some people advocate that government should establish regulations to reduce or eliminate any suspected health hazards in the environment, even when the scientific studies of these health hazards are incomplete or contradictory. In so far, I quite agree with the proposition.
To begin with, in the modern society, people are more and more concern about their health. They want clean air to breath, clean water to drink and many other things needed to live a better life. The government, which is intended to serve the public, have the duty to satisfy most of the people in the country. Otherwise, public may suffer from the disease caused by the environmental pollution and will be dissatisfied with the government. For example, in the country India, the government was not concerned with the suspected health hazards in the environment very much and had few regulations to reduce such hazards. Therefore, a serious leach from a factory which made insecticide happened in the 1980’s, and thousands of people died of the deadly poisonous gas.
In the second place, the government has the authority to commit some regulations to reduce the environmental hazards. The individual persons or companies have little contribution in protecting the environment. The government, which is representative of the whole country, has the right to regulate the individual persons or companies to comply with the regulation. Otherwise, the government can punish unconfined individuals by using the country power. Therefore, government’s authority can make the action to protect environment more efficient.
Finally, some supervisors of the polluting industry may oppose to my view by asserting that no evidence can be shown to support the conclusion that the suspected health hazards the scientific studies of which are incomplete or contradictory are harmful to human beings. Thus, government should not establish regulations that focus on these potential health hazards. But their opinion can not be supported since these hazards may probably be poisonous to the environment and even to people’s heath.
In sum, I quite agree with the argument that government should establish regulations to reduce any suspected health hazards in the environment because government is responsible to people’s health which is related to the environment, and because government is authorized to solve the problem.
