2018 accounting or finance PhD 求定位

基本工作，教育背景：

企业财务工作10年+
GMAT 740, IETLS 7.0
本科是双非的一本专业，会计学。年级成绩前5%。学过线性代数概率统计高等数学课程。
Top 30 MBA目前第一学期GPA 4.0

学术研究：
现在在本校金融系跟着教授研究一个课题。主要给教授抓data, 核对data对错（刚开始做没几个月）。教授在这个领域发过JEF的文章。

sit in 了 capital markets based research seminiar, sit in accounting department weekly worshop.

sit in 了 asset pricing theory.

sit in SAS, WRDS培训课

这背景有强推的话非常strong的...
1. 如果想去学校做教授，肯定accounting更好更容易；如果想去业界，accounting也有可能，但是finance肯定好不少。
2. 问推荐人...我觉得如果有强推，top 20挺有希望。
3. 应该。
4. 可以上个introductory research seminar感受一下吧，不过不知道贵校有没有这种课，就是绝大部分的field的classical paper和methods都给你过一遍。也可以看看有没有你想做方向的seminar（理论上肯定有...）不过不知道会不会让你直接上。

据我了解，acct phd毕业了几乎就是当老师拿tenure，不会进企业，也不会有企业需要会计博士。

acct phd 去美国学术界好找工作挺多。Econ的phd 不怎么会来抢饭碗。如果对industry有兴趣的话，可以考虑finance, 但是如果只是做corporate finance的稍微难些。Industry 的范围大概是asset manager, econ/fin consulting, big banks, and gov't regulator.
研究来看的话，empirical capital markets其实研究内容acct fin都差不多，特别如果是比较top的学校出来。

Anyway, 还是看自己的兴趣啦。

I plan to do empirical capital markets research after reading some papers. Specifically, I want to research relationship between financial statements and capital markets.

there are mainly four topics in this area.
1. fundamental analysis and valuation
2. tests of capital markets efficiency
3. role of accounting in contracts and in the political process.
4.disclousure regulation

I plan to choose fundamental analysis and valuation function. in this function, research focuses on building valuation models, examining empirical applications of the valuation models, employing fundamental analysis to forecast earnings and future stock returns.

I want to choose this function based on two main reasons:

first of all, I have an accounting background. I did well in accounting in industry in the past 10 years. now I do my MBA program with dual degrees in Finance and Business analytics.
second, in private, I am a value investor. I like to do investment following Ben Graham's methods. I like to research companies' financial statements and value companies.
I have strong passion to move forward.

because of the two reasons, I want to research the relation between financial statements and capital markets.
I knew both finance and accounting have this function. however, that being said, If you apply accounting PhD, you might could apply highly ranked programs.

I am not sure about that.

I inquired both program. I am welcomed to attend the research seminar. I plan to attend both and figure out what they are doing right now.

if I do fundamental analysis and valuation, like value investing, can I find a job in industry.

I am not sure whether I will be a teacher or assets manager 5 years later ( it is a long time!)

so I want to choose a major which I could have more options after graduation.

没问题的，做capital market research的会计phd去业界的非常多，很多资产管理公司如black rock ,PIMCO, 无数hedge fund, 当然还有信用评级公司如Moody's 和标普都招会计phd。不少会计老师都去业界大资产管理公司待几年（或兼职），回归学术界后自己也做hedge fund，中外的例子不少。

你的背景很好，也愿意充分调研和准备，拿到好的推荐信申请结果会不错的。不过拿了会计phd后才去业界有点亏。

well, here is the thing. If you are in say top 10 accounting or finance program, i don't think you will have a problem landing either academic or industry job. If you are in a tier 3 type of accounting program, landing a industry job might be a little hard while staying in academia might be the optimal option. But students coming from same tier of finance program might not get placed as well as accounting program in recent years.

Earnings management is a good and safe area.
