H1b and the school you get into are completely different things. All employers will want you to first use your opt because it is much faster for you to get. Most for profit companies can only apply for h1b between April and oct and the spots usually fill up by may/June. That's means your first year of work will definitely have to be in opt since you will not make the deadline if you graduate in may. The opt lasts for one year with option for renewal as long as you remain employed. In your second year your company will apply for your h1b as long as you are doing a good job. For some jobs, the company will not sponsor h1b regardless of what school you are from or what school you went to. So when you are applying for jobs, definitely make sure to check this. The only exception to this rule are non profits. Non profits like most universities, charities, hospitals etc can sponsor h1b whenever. However these places usually only sponsor for very senior level positions of research positions. They also pay much less than private industry.
I guess the conclusion is, just because you didn't get into a top twenty school doesn't mean you will not get h1b sponsorship. This will depend more on the position you applied for and your work performance. If you are bad at your job in the first year, you will not get h1b sponsorship even if you graduated from harvard. |
