LSAT-27-2-13

Numismatist: In medieval Spain, most gold coins were minted from gold mined in West Africa, in the area that is now Senegal. The gold mined in this region was the purest known. Its gold content of 92 percent allowed coins to be minted without refining the gold, and indeed coins minted from this source of gold can be recognized because they have that gold content. The mints could refine gold and produced other kinds of coins that had much purer gold content, but the Senegalese gold was never refined.

13.   Which one of the following inferences about gold coins minted in medieval Spain is most strongly supported by the information the numismatist gives?

(A) Coins minted from Senegalese gold all contained the same weight, as well as the same proportion of gold.

(B) The source of some refined gold from which coins were minted was unrefined gold with a gold content of less than 92 percent.

(C) Two coins could have the same monetary value even though they differed from each other in the percentage of gold they contained.

(D) No gold coins were minted that had a gold content of less than 92 percent.(B)

(E) The only unrefined gold from which coins could be minted was Senegalese gold.

答案是B, 我选C. 我觉得原文推不出B. 而C是可以的.

请指点.

Most of coins are made from the purest gold of 92%. So, these coins cannot be refined to highter level. Obviously, the rest of coins being refined must be below 92%.

C   no information can allow you to get this inference.   ( where is your clue ? )

C. say if two gold coins have equal value of10$, one minted from gold mined in West Africa contains 92% gold, and the other minted from other source. The latter one can be refined with other gold content. This allows us to deduct C.

Numismatist: In medieval Spain, most gold coins were minted from gold mined in West Africa, in the a ...

Spot the question type: Must be true

Core of the argument:

Most gold were minted ---> Gold mined in West Africa ( Senegal ) ---> purest know ---> no refining the gold ---> allow coins to be minted ---> Could be recognized no less than 92 % --->

Mints ---> refine gold + ( produced other kinds of coins ---> much purer gold content )

Content does not allow coin to be minted ---> refining the gold

( No refining the gold ---> Allow coin to be minted )

Gold in Senegalese ---> no refine

Ok, apparently, what we are going to do is to put ( Gold In S ---> No refine ) to the original logic chains to see what would be the other logical relationship could be established.

Let us dive into the answers

A.  Could be true but not must be true

B. If some of the refined gold is from where the coin was minted ---> it must be true that the source of the gold does contain less than 92 percent oft the gold.

Tricky tricky.

ok, we know that most of the gold coins were minted from the gold mine in Senegal, and the gold minded from S was never refined. ---> gold content of 92 percent must allow coins to be minted

Based on the first sentence, we know that it must be true that at least some of the gold coins were minted not from the gold mined in West Africa, and we also know the fact that if the gold from S never required to be refined, it must have the gold no less than 92%. In that sense, for the gold mined not from S, if coin minted from those gold, required to be refined, it must be true that the gold is less than 92% of the gold content.

* Mint ---> make coins more purer gold content.

C. Totally irrelevant
