大家好
遇到Prep的一个句子，其中不懂的部分加了下划线，

Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century chartered trading companies, despite the international scope of their
activities, are usually considered irrelevant to this discussion: the volume of their
transactions is assumed to have been too low and the communications and transport of
their day too primitive to make comparisons with modern multinationals interesting.
这句是不是如下这句的缩写？如果是的话，为什么可以这样省略呢？
the communications and transport of
their day is assumed to be too primitive to make comparisons with modern multinationals interesting.

加粗的后半句我也看不懂，这个merit作动词的话应该是merited吧，难道做名词的？
merit further study 这个怎么解释？
还有analogues of more modern structure
adj+of+noun 结构？这个又如何解释？
