Just imagine, if a man ate with everything cooked automatically by the machines in the kitchen and lived in a house where is neat and clean because of some housekeeping mechanical helpers, will you jump to the conclusion that this man is weak and dependent, regardless of anything else? Of course, what I have to admit is that the we tend to become lazy because of the modern technology which brings us unprecedented conveniences. Automobiles commutes us easily between our home and workplace; remote controllers helps to turn us into sofa potatoes faster than we can imagine; a click on the mouse collects all the information we need from the cyberspace…we aim to avoid labor work whenever we can to attain what we want, worse still, we even don’t need to think. This may lead to terrible results if we are just content with what we have, enjoying all the luxuries and that's it. However, the judgment of a truly strong and independent individual should not just limit to their reliance on modern technology. For a strong individual, we should look into his reaction to failure; for an independent one, his ability to survive in the competitive society matters most. When talking about a strong individual, most frequently, we are implicating what a strong heart he has. Because that’s a heart that never compromises with failure or any adversaries in life, whatever happens, he always fights till wins or devastated, but never cowers. Such individuals as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Winston Churchill come immediately to mind. Besides, this is much alike great athletes, who we extol mainly because of their sportsmanship—a spirit of fortitude and resistance. Since a small child, we are educated to look up to mentally strong people because it is those kind of spirits that guarantees a more fruitful and meaningful life. An independent individual is who can survive in the society, despite its competition and cruelty. For a person, a necessary skill that can secure a stable job, communication skill, interpersonal skill etc. are this society calling for. Because with these skills, you can live without depending on others. But more importantly, one needs to have a critical thought about everything in life, therefore, he can avoid being deceived by a variety of information to gain the true independence. We can often read repeated reports on the newspapers about people weeping over their lost properties because of deceived by others. This is such an urgent calling to warn us to be independent in mind. The conveniences in modern life saves us time and efforts, but never settle there. Becoming a truly strong and independent individual is more of a spiritual journey, and it’s about being resistant and critical. |
