Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important to award students for effort (trying or hard working) than for achievement (good grades). Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
In the past, people tended to have a favorable attitude that students should be awarded only if they have got achievements. But as the process itself becomes more and more important, some might thought that those who have tried already also worth the award. As far as I am concerned, the attitude varies from different situations.
The students who fail to achieve the goals but have already strived to do so are worth of the prices. For the sake of the time and energy they have spent, they really spare no effort to fight for the achievement, and this attitude is more preciously than the achievement itself. Also, the work which has been done already should be taken into account. With the award, students will become more confident and when they encounter the difficulties stepping in their ways later, they will try even harder to solve the problems. What's more, students who get awards in this situation will treasure the process and the experiments they learnt from the failure but not just focus on the achievement, which means a lot to their future success.
On the other hand, awarding students who have achieved the final goals is reasonable. Obviously, no matter how lucky a person is, those who succeed in something must have worked hard and spent a lot before, so they are undoubtedly worth of the reward. Besides, many people fail because they could not insist and give up when they encounter problems. For the spirit of consisting to the final destination and the ability to solve problems, being awarded can encourage students to overcome the difficulties and equip themselves with persistence.
As to which one is more important, the answers vary because of the different situations. For instance, a student who took part in a bicycle competition failed to be the champion since the stomachache. Although he lost the game while he did have the ability to win, he still got on the bicycle and finished the game. The spirit is more important than the ranking, and that's why the student worth the compliment. We could not only see the outcome and ignore the work that has been done. Success is undoubtedly worth the reward, but the sweat should not be neglected. |
