In 1981 children in the United States

A.chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hoursa week

B.chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearlysix hours a week

C.chores, whereas nearly six hours a week werespent in 1997

E.chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997

我选的E。
答案B。可是为什么是过去完成时：had grown....
请大家来探讨一下应该怎么理解哦

Choice E needs a semi-colon to properly connect two independent clauses because the word "that" tricks you by thinking it is a connector. I crossed off C/D/E because the expression "in 1997" seems to have changed the meaning of original modifier "by 1997". Choice A is wrong because the pronoun "they" seems ambiguous (is it referring to children or chores?). That leaves you with choice B.

E里的that我并没有以为是连词。而且逗号后面的也不是一个句子啊。我想的that figure 指代以前的数据。
我赞同你说的可是觉得没有办法理解为什么是过去完成时态。。。

根据Manhattan语法，ing形式一般不用，除非是语境必须要求。而过去完成时有表示sequence的含义。

Choice B，前面一个 by 1997 明确表示了 sequence 的语境，所以后面用过去完成时。

Choice E，无缘无故使用了 -ing 形式，无任何意义。

具体请参照 Manhattan 的那个关于 tense， mood and voice 的章节，貌似在108页左右（具体页数不确定，但这个考点昨天刚看过，记忆犹新啊）

可是growing修饰figure啊
1981 跟1997 97后为什么动物完成比81还早呢？

Ok I looked at E again, there are couple more errors: "that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997" is a run-on sentence because it lacked a coordinating conjunction after the comma. This run-on sentence has its own subject "figure" and verb "growing". Also, the verb "growing" does not agree with the verb tense in the first part of the sentence.

It is hard to explain why the past perfect tense is correct in B. Usually you do not need to use that tense when the sequence is obvious, but please note you do not always use the past perfect for earlier actions. Answer B just sounded right to me because I've lived in the US for a while. Sometimes you can try your luck with the answer that simply "sounds" correct..

Well, yeah its kinda weird. I can see now that B is the best choice, but it might not be a perfect one.
