主干： the rationale for Herbert's emphasis ..... is finally undermined by what....
几个主要结构:
主语：emphasis on the social and political realities (that... to communicate定语从句)  rather than (emphasis省略) on their style
状语可以简化为：by AAA (what从句)
what从句可以复原为： Herbert concedes AAA（即what） was the failure of impressionist painters  (to serve as particularly conscientious illustrators of their social milieu WHAT从句内嵌的目的状语)
