Starfish, with anywhere from five to eight arms, have a strong regenerative ability, and if one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating and growing an extra one or two.

A one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating and
B one arm is lost it is quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating and
C they lose one arm they quickly replace it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating,
D they lose one arm they are quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating,
E they lose one arm it is quickly replaced, sometimes with the animal overcompensating,

我的问题是：
(1) with anywhere from five to eight arms: Prep里说with+名词表示主语“拥有”with后面的名词，这种结构我能理解。可是不太理解with + anywhere from...这个是什么用法？如何翻译，是说anywhere的starfish都是5-8 arms还是...?
(2) 在正选B中的with the animal sometimes overcompensating...这个with有是什么用法？如何理解？
(3) 我不是很理解为什么growing和overcompensating是并列关系，为什么growing不能修饰overcompensating呢？

（1）"Starfish, with anywhere from five to eight arms," 对于这个的理解是这样的：意思是说“海星，无论在哪里都有5-8只触手”，这里的anywhere可以说是用来修饰with的，只不过在位置上可能有些前置
（2）这里的with是独立主格，表示伴随，修饰主句的主谓；理解起来的意思是“...如果它们的一个触手丢失了，这个触手会很快（通过这种动物的过度补偿和本身就多长了一个或两个触手）被替换”，with就是括号里的内容
（3）growing和compensating本身两个都是动名词，是不能相互修饰的；再由意思可以判断两个是并列的，补充触手可以是海星自身的过度补偿，也可以是海星本身就多长了触手

我的理解这里独立主格结构中的overcompensating和growing不是并列关系，而是有个时间先后。先overcompensate然后再grow，相当于do and do的结构，如果用do，doing的结构就不能表达出二者之间的先后关系。

嗯，2和3明白了，感谢回复！1虽然还是不太明白这个结构，先记住这个用法吧……

另外，这题我错选了C. 这句话为什么不能理解为...they lose one arm they quickly replace it by doing sth. 然后后面的growing作为后置定语来修饰前面的动名词doing呢？

这里的compensating 和growing的关系不是很清楚，为什么是and，如果是两种独立的方法不应该是or吗？原谅我的无知吧！最近语法糟糕得很

看清楚题干就不会弄错了，题干里面说的是one arm，可是后面却用了一个复数的they来指代这个Arm。为什么我知道这个复数they是指代arm呢？因为这里用了被动语态，被啥啥取代，所以这里不对哦。

要特别注意单复数才行
