我觉得这个题b项是曼哈顿里的absolute phrase:
A few GMAT sentences use a sophisticated modifier called an Absolute Phrase. Absolute phrases are
composed of a noun plus a noun modifier. These phrases do not have to modify what they touch;
rather, they modify the main clause in some way.
Right: His head held high, Owen walked out of the store.
The absolute phrase His head held high is composed of a noun {His head) and a noun modifier {held
high) that describes the noun. The phrase His head held high describes how Owen walked out of the
store. Thus, this absolute phrase acts as a verb modifier.
You might argue that the noun Owen is directly described by His head held high, especially since the
pronoun His refers to Owen. However, you should note that His head held high is not an appositive
noun modifier. We are not placing His head held high next to Owen to equate them. Moreover, we can
easily move the modifier to the end of the sentence; we cannot do so with normal noun modifiers. We
can also vary the phrase slightly by adding with.
Right: Owen walked out of the store, his head held high.
Right: Owen walked out of the store with his head held high.

114. Starfish, with anywhere from five to eight arms, have a strong regenerative ability, and if one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating and growing an extra one or two.

(A) one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating and(is lost 为被动,后面省略了then,第一个it指代的是starfish,应用they,第二个为arm,第二句用的为主动,不符合平行)

(B) one arm is lost it is quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating and(符合平行)

(C) they lose one arm they quickly replace it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating,(前一句都为主动,但是后面一句overcompensating与growing应该为并列的两种方式,加了逗号,改变了平行的结构)

(D) they lose one arm they are quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating,(growing为现在分词,不能修饰overcompensating,且lose为主动,而are replaced为被动,且they are 应指代one arm,应用it is)

(E) they lose one arm it is quickly replaced, sometimes with the animal overcompensating,(参照D)
突破口:If  x  ,(then)  y,  x 与y应该平行的,应该同主动,同被动

OG对C 选项解释的这句: This answer choice allows the unintended reading that the animal replaces the missing arm by overcompensating.
我就是这么理解的啊,难道不是通过overcompensating来弥补失去的触角么= =

对此很迷惑,是不是因为C是说通过overcompensating,而应该是通过overcompensating and growing...,
不过想想还是不太对

按照这个思路,谈一下个人关于by和with的区别吧,轻拍
by:表达的意思是有时通过overcompensate来replace   (不是intended meaning吧)
with:表伴随修饰前面的句子if one arm is lost it is quickly replaced,表达的意思是如果一只触角掉了,它可以很快被替代,【有时(甚至)会过度补偿】     【】中是with...中的内容

这道题目的考点有两个:Agreement、Modifier
通过主谓一致,可以排除A、D。
B、C、E主要考察的是modifier,可以发现其实splits在于sometimes by/with, 还是with sometimes。
Modifier的判别要从句意考虑,如果replace可以sometimes by/with overcompensatinig,那么也就是说replace还可以sometimes NOT by/with overcompensating, 句子不是这个意思。
另外,如同OG从rhetorical上解释也可以排除E。
我觉得这题的难点在于B和C,语法上BC都是正确的,C: they lose one arm they quickly replace it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating, growing an extra one or two.  这里用的Verb+ing修饰主句,growing an extra one or two表示对they replace it的结果或同时发生的状态,如果这样的结构,sometimes by the animal overcompensating显示是插入语,也就是说growing an extra one or two这个结果和“sometimes by the animal overcompensating”这句话没有必然联系,即使没有这句,结果还是会growing an extra one or two, 但是显然逻辑上不 make sense. 因此只有选B。
从这道题上我有两个learning:
1. keep in mind SC is basically GRAMMAR when we look through all answer choices.
2. keep in mind SC is specially MEANING when only 2 or 3 options left.

也就是说overcompensating and growing an extra one or two只是replace的意外情况而不是刻意这么做,所以with比by要更准确。顺便这两个动作是明显有前后关系的,没有overcompensating就没有growing an extra one or two,所以需要用and来表示这种递进关系。
