我感觉them指scientists，allowing好像修饰的是the durability 。

and logic subject for "allowing" is "such answer"

them refers to scientists

i think allowing is used to illustrate the effect of the main clause, not to modify the particular word.

In other words,

answer the questions first, then allow to.....
