Highways or public transportation, which should be given preferential financing?
In our country, the need to build high ways is more imperative than renewing and introducing more transportation. I, from a remote rural place, come to realize that the main problem hindering the development in most part of our country is shortage fund in building highways. With the fast developing pace of market economy, it is significant for goods and people to get involved with the globalization. While unfortunately in China, there are still many places are impoverished by the cutting off from the outside world. The famous saying tells us that the first thing to get rich is the construction of roads. We have witnessed the prosperous history of many big cities from small villages and towns. For those places which are still deprived of the chances to the exchanging economy, it would be tremendous step to build highways for them.
Additionally, the public transportation systems now in many big cities are under the charge of big enterprises. They will do their utmost to improve the system in order to provide superior service to the city dwellers. Competition from private cars has forced the transportation companies to introduce varied tools, from crowded buses to subways across the downtown, from trains to fast planes. Due to the high demand of customers, they seek ways to be friendly to the environment while the incentives for them are interests. Therefore government needs to make laws instead of investing a large sum of money in that transportation in big cities.
What’s more, in spite of the fact that in theory more public transportation would reduce traffic with more people taking buses, trains, subways and so on, the trend of private cars in big cities is likely to continuing in rising. Life is easier for them than ever before. They choose cars not because the public buses are in short but the fashion enjoyment of owning cars. Hence the investment in highways in some rural country may have more profound impacts.
