工作经验一直是搞软件开发的，想申请MBA，是不是很有劣势？

工科本科，硕士，毕业3年一直在一家互联网公司搞软件开发，想申请MBA，是不是很大的劣势？

需要转入一个商业行业再积累一些经验再考虑申请MBA吗？

真心求助。

As long as you can demonstrate the qualities (for example, http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/admission/admission_criteria.html) that admissions office look for, it doesn't matter what you do. I just met a future classmate who is a winemaker.

我觉得会有，如果你的target是m7。关键看你essay怎么发挥了。如果3年纯技术，没什么项目管理的经验，跟人打交道很少，很难写出compelling stories打动别人。你可以更着重extracurricular的leadership，但是也会emphasize你的limited professional experience

The best software engineers I met are always excellent at communications and demonstrate great leadership as well. Leadership is about how you approach issues and tasks, not necessarily the fields of those issues and tasks.

Good software engineers have the very same analytical capabilities that GMAT is testing. LZ's experience is not a disavantage for b-school application. I have seen bio-statistics researcher going to b-school and Wall street, so go figure...

我的个人看法,不觉得有劣势,相反现在很多学校挺看重有技术背景的管理人才的,因为现在IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT的需求比GENERAL ADMIN的需要大多了.

我有几个朋友是IT背景申请MBA都是GMAT分超低居然都被录取了.只要你在申请的时候能够表现出你的MANAGEMENT方面的潜力和你在这方面的目标.如果你在软件开发的时候做过TEAM LEAD就更没问题了.

对啊，上面有很多hidden assumptions：
比如
1. have leadership experiences - really hard for someone with only 3 yrs right out of school, and have been focusing on pure technical side
2. *a* MBA program Vs m7 MBA programs

我去年就是3 yrs pure technical，光target m7，GPA和GMAT都不错，最好的结果也只是waitlist。得到的feedback就是strong academic, but limited professional experiences；另一个学校跟我说，everything's ok, but you don't stand out。

我也觉得software dev experience给我的帮助是巨大的，逻辑训练、multi-tasking，time management等等，communication skills自然不会差，因为经常需要用最简洁的email给一个非英语母语的人解释最复杂的technical problem。但这些在你有一个concrete example前都很难在essay里面表现出来，而这些concrete examples主要就来自project management experience，因为只有跟人打交道的essay才可以让没有technical background的adcom看懂，产生共鸣。此外，这个background把你放在了2 of the most competitve applicant pools - Chinese and programmers. you'll have a really hard time differentiating yourself

所以，如果你是想进*a* MBA program, sure, fire away。如果你想进top 15, doable, if you execute well。如果是非m7不可，it's a stretch

You still have a couple months before you apply. Try to get involved with community projects/volunteer work where you can take on leadership positions. You can also look into projects where you can play a leading role (not technically but in project management or cross-functional group coordination work). Good luck!

Man, you will be facing fiece competetion from the world most famed applicant pool: Indian male IT professional! The top guys of this pool posses unbelievable caliber you might not be able to imagine:

Those gmat like (51-45) is a mundane score for them... Many of them speak polished English. Indian males start work @ 20, so same age as us, they have 3-4 years more exp...

I read through some of the essays done by my indian friends. They are just simply amazing!!! Vivid language with impressive illustration... I wished I wouldnt run for the same school as he did... By the way, he was dinged by darden, duke, ross, and lbs....reason can not be simpler, too little porridge and too many monks. And any Chinese IT techies will be one of the latter...

These facts make other people devastated...

I got in
Ross and Duke this year w/ 4 yrs of experience. It was a great deal of hard work.
Still no luck at m7 though... but at least I had interviews, so it’s
doable, but you have to jump and reach
