（1） GWD-26-Q20In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing household chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.
A. chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week
B. chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearly six hours a week
C. chores, whereas nearly six hours a week were spent in 1997
D. chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997
E. chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997
答案选的是B。（1）我在想这里用的过去完成式是正确的么，不对吧，没有什么根据去选过去完成时吧，
（2）C选项答案给的解析是six hours a week 应该是个整体，所以谓语动词应用单数形式，这个怎么判断什么时候是整体什么时候不是呢

我的看法哦，首先一般用BY的后面都是过去完成时（不知道这么说有没有道理。。）

C的话，你看可以不可以加介词，比如 six hours in a week, six hours of a week，如果可以那么说明six hours是主语
