The loan applicant recommends that a new proposed jazz club in Monroe would be a profitable investment. To support this recommendation the applicant cites various evidences: (1) there is no other jazz clubs in Monroe; (2) the local residents are exceptionally interested in jazz music; and (3) a nationwide survey shows that fans of jazz spend large sum of money on jazz recreation.
First of all, the recommendation relies on an assumption that Monroe residents have a high proportion of jazz fans. The popularity of annual jazz festival, however, do not necessarily indicate that Monroe residents would be interested in jazz. It is entirely possible that the vast majority of attendees are out-of-town visitors. The measly fact that several famous jazz musicians live in Monroe accomplishes nothing toward bolstering the assertion. Perhaps the reason why these jazz musicians settle down in Monroe is the peaceful lifestyle in Monroe, where residents are few, if any, jazz fans. For that matter, these musicians are less likely, even reluctant, to perform in the C-Note club.
Secondly, even if jazz is more popular among Monroe residents than elsewhere, the applicant assumes further that people would visit the C-Note club to enjoy live jazz play. Perhaps they would prefer listening the radio programs whose expenditure is much lower than that of jazz club, especially considering that the program airs in the evening. Moreover, if the demand for a jazz club in Monroe were as enormous as the applicant asserts, it would be more convincing that Monroe has at least one or more such clubs. The fact that the closest jazz club is 65 miles away indicates that there may be some club playing jazz music although not claiming to specialize in live jazz show.
Finally, the nationwide survey that an average jazz fan spends $ 1,000 each year on jazz entertainment works efficiently only the basis that Monroe residents are typical nationwide jazz fans. Since the applicant provide no credible information referred to the fraction of this emblematic fans among residents as well as the money they will spend in jazz clubs, we cannot predict the prosperity of C-Note clubs, let alone the tremendous profit.
In sum, the recommendation lacks certain essential evidence that render it convincing as it stands. To well bolster the claim the applicant must provide the reason why Monroe currently has no jazz clubs, and perhaps a local survey or study indicating the high popularity of jazz music in Monroe. Besides, I need to know whether the musician would like to play at the C-Note club. |
