21. Historian:We can learn about the medical history of individuals through chemical analysisof their hair. It is likely, for example, that Isaac Newton’s psychologicalproblems were due to mercury poisoning; traces of mercury were found in hishair. Analysis is now being done on a lock of Beethoven’s hair. Although noconvincing argument has shown that Beethoven ever had a venereal disease, somepeople hypothesize that venereal disease caused his deafness. Since mercury wascommonly ingested in Beethoven’s time to treat venereal disease, if researchersfind a trace of mercury in his hair, we can conclude that this hypothesis iscorrect.

Which one of thefollowing is an assumption on which the historian’s argument depends?

A.      None of the mercury introducedinto the body can be eliminated.
B.       Some people in Beethoven’s timedid not ingest mercury.
C.       Mercury is an effectivetreatment for venereal disease.
D.      Mercury poisoning can causedeafness in people with venereal disease.
E.       Beethoven suffered frompsychological problems of the same severity as Newton’s.
答案是b但是上了新東方的課說some做主語絕對不選。。。汗了。
但是還是理不清楚選b的理由
結論 VD-Deef
原因 M治癒 VD
B選項一些人不用m和結論有什麼關係?
應該是大部分人都不攝入m才對麼?因為大部分人不攝入m,所以頭髮裏有m是因為要治癒VD。

Negation mehtod.

If everyone in B's time ate mercury, then finding mercury in B's hair means nothing. The conclusion just falls apart.
