While there seems to beincreasing evidence that the worst of the recent economic crisis is over andthat a new depression was avoided due to fast and decisive economic policies, many regions of the world still face significant uncertainties in terms of theeconomic outlook for year 2010. This presentation will review the effects ofthe crisis in different countries and regions of the world in 2009, when themaximum impact of the crisis was felt and the perspectives for 2010. What “exitstrategies” will be applied by the industrial countries? Is there apossibility of a W crisis in the United States ? Professor -Gonzalo Garland
As well asteaching the core course on Economic Environment, an elective course onBusiness in Developing Countries and several short courses and conferences inthe executive education division, Gonzalo Garland also finds time to carry outthe administrative responsibilities required of him in his role as director ofexternal relations at Instituto de Empresa.
But teaching - which he says he first experienced at the age of 17 - is in hisblood and he remains passionate about it. “Teaching is crucial,” he says. “Ilike transmitting knowledge and being able to explain things that at firstmight seem difficult for people. But when they suddenly understand what you’retalking about and see the relevance, it’s very gratifying.”
In the field of macroeconomics, Prof Garland has conducted research into theeconomic effects of demographic changes and he is also an expert on financialcrises. And with his specialist knowledge of the economics of developingcountries such as China, India , Brazil and Mexico, ProfGarland expertise is much in demand, as MBA students look for businesseducation programmes that have an increasingly international flavour.
“Everyone wants a more global vision,” he says. “And the fact that 85 per centof students in the international MBA at Instituto de Empresa are from outside Spain makesthe classes fascinating because often, what you’re talking about is somethingthat people are relating to the situation in their own countries.”
