Purdue gives you almost full tuition waiver. You only pay $850/year + living cost. You will get some income from internship. Your annual income $6200 + income from internship will be taxable. But there is tax treaty between US and PRC. Article 20(c) of the USA-China income tax treaty allows an annual $5000 exclusion of student wages from gross income.
So your taxable income becomes $1200+income from intern => almost nothing on Federal tax, but you have to pay State Tax if your State collects income tax.
