不理解那句话也可以解题的。题目说成年的white pine繁密茂盛，遮住阳光，幼年树苗无法生长。如果茂密森林里的white pine全是成年的，他们定是在不被成年white pine的遮掩下生成的（幼苗一起生长），它们的树龄差不超过the length of time it takes a white pine to grow to maturity (a).

你问的那句是不是可以翻译成：白松令地表的枯枝落叶易于干枯。

我不是牛人，有些可能会说错。
