AI: 150 "The most important quality for a leader of an organization to have is not the ability to plan, to organize, and to solve problems but rather the ability to communicate the organization’s mission and to inspire people to work toward fulfilling that mission."

What is the most important quality for a leader of an organization? The author claims that the ability to communicate the organization’s mission and to inspire people to work toward fulfilling that mission is the most important quality. While others argue that the ability to plan, to organize, and to solve problems is more important quality. Maybe there is no an absolute answer. While on my opinion, these abilities are both important. the final judgment should rely on a case-by-case analysis.

On the one hand, the ability to communicate the organization’s mission and to inspire people to work toward fulfilling that mission is very important, sometimes crucial, to a leader to succeed. A good example may be found in the case of Dr. Gao Qunyao’s failure experience in Microsoft. Dr. Gao Qunyao, the pre-president of Microsoft China, who has great ability to plan, to organize and to solve problem—this ability made him successful in Autodesk, when switched to Microsoft, facing a complex market circumstance,  found it hard to communicate the organization’s mission with his superior. At the same time ,he had different views with his subordinate on how to define the mission. As the consequence, he had to quit his job.

On the other hand, however, the ability to plan, to organize, and to solve problems can be also crucial. Here I can give another evidence.  Ms.Yu Cuiwei, is a very attractive woman. She is very good at communication. She, with her colleagues, made a logical mission . And she was also successful to inspire her colleagues to work toward fulfilling that mission. But,since Ms. Yu’s team was so young, it had not enough experience to solve the problems it met. When it planned a discount in the end of the year, it had a big contradiction with its distributors, who said the plan would sharply decrease their profits. In the following year, many distributors switched to other suppliers, and Ms.Yu had to leave her company.

In sum, I think both abilities are prerequisites  quality for a leader but neither is sufficient. The lack of either ability will form a bottleneck of management, and then lead to a failure consequence.
