结论是many of them are no better off financially than they were before the increase

要找原因解释为什么在考虑了通货膨胀因素后，许多老人在实际已经拿到比以前更多的退休金的情况下，经济状况反而不如以前了呢？当然一个可能的原因是，老人的经济状况不仅决定于他的退休金，可能还有子女给的钱什么的。
