想说一下我的想法：首先，
activation 这里不能作同位语，因为同位语修饰的是紧邻的名词，在这里也就是exhibit。
但此题中，不是exhibit 激活了这个funcrion。
其次，
如果activation作独立主格的主语修饰整个句子表结果的话，那么主语后面确实缺少一个动词，正如manhattan上这句话：
scientist have found high levels of Iridium in certain geological formations around the world, results that suggest the cataclysmic impact of a meteor millions of years ago.
但是独立主格的主语要和修饰的那句话有关系，activation和那句话单看没有关系。所以不能做独立主格的主语。
最后，
activation只能是一句话的主语了，但是因为后面没有谓语，所以sentence imcomplete.

感觉楼主分析的很好啊，但是如果做同位语，activation 前面就不应该有in turn吧？而且同位语修饰的不一定是最近的那个名词，比如说在In 1713, Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad, a work that took him seven years to complete and that literary critic Samuel Johnson, Pope's contemporary, pronounced the greatest translation in any language.这里修饰的就是整个translation of the Illiad，这个是我的理解，欢迎讨论~

我这个选的B，就是因为我以为同位语可以是动作的同位语。an activation 不能代指 前句的 touch exhibit的touch这个动作吗？
虽然我当时也觉得轻重不太合适，但是觉得activate这个动作一定应该是修饰 touch exhibit的，人们触摸展品这个动作才使得作品的动画功能被激活。 而不是 人们激活了作品的功能。
而D选项中，是activate和touch平行了，逻辑主语是人，所以觉得不合逻辑。其实这个题如果有，activating的话应该是现在分词更合适吧。

我语言混乱，就是想问一下，是不是 名词不能做动词的同位语？知不知道这是哪里讲的？

同位语只能指代名词，和主语谓语没有必然联系。。。
activate和touch的关系是 -- 人去touch，这个动作导致激活activate了动画，而不是activate可以指代touch，句子逻辑意思要看懂

楼上说的对呢，楼主你要是看句子意思，那这道题根本不用纠结“语法”了
an online version of the museum, encourages visitors to "touch" each exhibit,意思的重点在to touch each exibit,是要去触摸，那你说哪个选项最能反映这样的句意关系呢？

楼上说得对，其实语法的关键还是看句意，这里是鼓励“touch”这个时间导致了后面activate的动作的发生，用and thereby连接最为恰当
