46-07 Retailers' customers cautioned as cyberattacks continue

Cyber attacks are unavoidable by big retailers. The latest cyber attack target being the Home Depot. Experts explained cyber attacks happened when the credit card was swiped, information gets transferred from the little terminal that the customer use to swipe the card. In a statement, home depot states that debit pin numbers and online shoppers were not effected. Only those used a card swipe terminal were effected. Expert advises are shop with credit cards instead of debit cards since credit cards have more special protections. Such breach will last for another year or several years.

The article has reported how China's retail market evolved. Firstly, the market has highly digitalized. Mobile has became a highly significant sales channel. Consumers are highly rely on mobile shopping, and therefore mobile payment services are fasting-growing with large companies such as Tencents and Alipay offered different payment methods. Secondly, as China moves towards a consumer-driver economy, the retailers have to rise product and service quality instead of rapid expansion. Retailers are invest more in R&D investments, the launch of long-term branding campaigns, and the creation of retail concepts, and therefore lead to the rise of private labels. Private labels is said to be on the rising trend since they have the potential to increase profits and customer loyalty, and building retail membership program have long been popular in China.

The passage explains some details about retail marketing strategies. Retail business has to make decisions on something called market mix. A market mix consists of product, price, place, promotion and packaging. Therefore, Internet and retail marketing are consisted of different marketing mix. A retail marketing strategy is first outlined in a business plan. It contains information about the intention and goals of the company that includes the store location et al. Common retail marketing strategies involve how products and stores are positioned and differentiated that focuses on how to make products to stand out. Retail market differentiation must set stores and products apart in order to create strong branding. Retail products and services in the same industry differ greatly depending on their price range and other issues.

46-07 Citibank to quit Japan's retail market: another QE casualty

The author has explains what is QE, and how QE affects the Japan banking market. QE in practical terms means "zero interest rate" for the banking business. The Bank of Japan was holding domestic yen currency interbank funding rates and money market rates at effectively zero. This meant that banks could raise unlimited yen in the money market for effectively no cost. During the project, BOJ's engineered ultralow interest rate make the branch network unprofitable. In such environment, the strategy was basically either to sell fee-based products or to focus on foreign currency business, and Citibank had been the earliest and most aggressive bank to promote retail foreign currency deposits. During last decade Citibank were able to offer interest rates significantly higher than Japanese banks for USD deposits because Citibank was able to these deposits much more profitably than Japanese banks. Now Citibank has decided to withdraw from Japan's retail market as the USD deposit business has stopped being profitable enough. Citi's departure will leave a huge gap in Japan's banking market.
